According to Wikipedia, Mariah Carey was a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr in the late 80s and it was Brenda who helped get Mariah in the door (and suppposedly in turn led to her own career demise) by giving Mariah's demo tape to Columbia chief Tommy Mottola.
